I paint with acrylics on watercolor paper, using the process of layering the paint and scratching back to reveal unique colors and textures in my paintings.
 
Draco is a painting based on the Draco constellation in the Northern Hemisphere. It is one of the largest constellations in the night sky and represents Ladon, the dragon that guarded the gardens of the Hesperides in Greek mythology. The name Draco means “the dragon” in Latin.
 
I started with a sketch of a dragon. Once I started painting the surrounding space, I realized the dragon needed to be larger so I enlarged him as I painted and then went back to the surrounding space to balance the darks and lights.
 
It was fun to try to make him flow through space while appearing strong and powerful. I think dragons are cool. They have been represented in art and myths throughout the world.
