I paint with acrylics on watercolor paper, using the process of layering the paint and scratching back to reveal unique colors and textures in my paintings.
 
31/Atlas Comet & Sun ~  a painting inspired by the  interstellar 31Atlax Comet which has come from the far reaches of our galaxy and now traveling in our solar system soon to go by the sun. Astronomers note that it is unusual because of the comet’s large oblong shape and the fast speed of travel. It has a green color because of the nickel in its composition. The other unusual event happening now is that here have been seven other comets traveling in our solar system joining 31 Atlas at this time, which they say have never happened before.
In the painting I chose to show Mars, Venus and Mercury with the Sun. Last week 31/Atlas passed Mars and is now closing in on the Sun and Venus. I painted six additional comets because one of the seven comets has already passed through. It was fun layering the colors in spirals and waves, I then added the planets and finally the comets, darkening the space for contrast against the comets.
To think that 31/Atlas has traveled from the fare reaches our galaxy and passed near Earth in November 25  and continued it’s orbit through the solar system for months, it’s quite a rare event and I look forward to seeing images and learning more as the astronomers gain more knowledge.
